The Ninja, a novel published in 1980, tells the story of Nicholas Linnear, a Sino-English martial artist, in a Japan traumatized by the very recent end of the Second World War. It is a detective novel, a horror novel at times, a story of fighting and the mafia. It is a dense, rich novel, which perhaps explains why it was not successfully adapted for the cinema, first by Irvin Kershner, then by his replacement, John Carpenter, who was to write the script with his accomplice Tommy Lee Wallace. It is fair to say that there is a little bit of The Ninja in the adventures of Jack Burton (and a little bit of The Golden Child too, another film that was offered to him), as well as a hint of revenge for the director against producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown.
