Munchinger's performances are a bit slower than most contemporary versions, but the real issue is that the music is carefully and expressively articulated. The dances really dance and have a courtly quality that must be closer to how they were originally performed and that contemporary zip-throughs do not even attempt. More importantly, recent performances of the Baroque repertoire barely can qualify as real music. They eschew almost every device musicians have always used: dynamic gradations, agogics, rhythmic accents, rubato, vibrato etc. These recordings from the 1960s also have excellent Decca sound and are highly recommended.
