After power-on reset, the MLX90614 is factory defaulted to output mode SMBus, PWM is not enabled. The SCL pin needs to be kept high at power-on to use PWM. If PWM is not enabled via EEPROM, the PWM/SDA pin will be used for SMBus communication directly after POR in which case no request status needs to be sent.
