c. 1900 Photograph of "COAL OFFICE" in Lehigh Indian Territory. Shows clapboard Coal Office with fence and side stairway. A man with a bowler stands at the bottom of the steps. A horse (probably pulling a buggy) stands at right. Lehigh in present day Coal County was founded in the Choctaw Nation in Atoka County in the 1870s. Finally named Lehigh in 1882 for the coal towns in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania it prospered in the coal industry, cattle ranching ranching and cotton farming. However by the early 1920s all the local industries had shrunk and the town went into a long decline. Today it has a population of a little over 200 folks. Photograph is 5" x 8" with 8" x 10" border. A rare photograph of the coal business in Oklahoma.
