These will only work on a Cat5 network, what they do is basically split the cable at the ends eg. patch panel and the data outlet or Cat5 socket. There are 4 pairs of cable within the Cat5 cable, 2 pairs are only used in normal circumstances, leaving 2 pairs unused, by plugging in the economiser's (one at each end) you are then creating the other 2 pairs to be used, therefore creating an extra data outlet.
